Overview of 5th Grade Curriculum


Religion:


In 5th grade the students will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the sacraments and the pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Areas of focus include:


  • what Catholics believe

  • how Catholics worship

  • how Catholics live

  • how Catholics pray

  • participating in community service

  • liturgical and prayer services

  • roots of sacraments in scripture and how each is celebrated in the Church today

  • deepen experiences of prayer

  • learn about Catholic devotions

  • encourage and develop strong Catholic views



Language Arts:


5th grade students will strengthen skills in relation to spelling, English grammar and composition, and reading. Areas of focus will include:


  • fiction

  • nonfiction

  • biography

  • short story

  • fantasy

  • poetry

  • narrative writing

  • expository writing



Math:


5th Grade students will review and reinforce skills learned in fourth grade, but will also include such areas of study including:


  • review and develop fluency with multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  • continue to develop an understanding of operations with decimals to the thousandths

  • extend long division to two digit divisors using variables and expressions

  • develop an understanding of volume

  • adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals

  • multiply and divide whole numbers

  • basic geometry (classifying angles, polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals)

  • make and test generalizations

  • add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers

  • find area, perimeter, and circumference

  • write and solve equations using variables

  • learn to record data using graphs

  • use concepts to solve real-life problems



Science:


5th graders continue building their knowledge base in the areas of Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Students use observation, demonstration, experimentation, and a variety of activities to explore such topics as:


  • thinking critically about the world

  • properties of matter

  • forms of energy

  • characteristics and adaptations of plants and animals

  • rocks

  • soil

  • weather

  • solar system



Social Studies:


Throughout the year, 5th graders use reading, writing, and study strategies to read, understand, and remember nonfiction information. 5th grade Social Studies topics include:


  • pre-Columbian civilizations

  • European exploration and colonization of North America

  • colonial America

  • The Revolutionary War

  • the formation of the United States government

  • review geography and map skills
